George doesn't celebrate his birthday because his mom never threw him a party; in turn, Max doesn't want a birthday party either. Angie feels George's attitude is having an unhealthy impact on Max and is determined to throw George his first birthday party.
George thinks that despite Max's school play about stranger danger, that's he not ready to walk to school by himself. But Angie doesn't agree. He attempts to show Max horror films and follows him secretly to school to see if he's prepared.
George goes into denial when Max is thought to have dyslexia, and things only get worse when Angie suggests he may have it as well. Meanwhile, Ernie leaves home and moves in with George and Angie and takes on the job of minding his girlfriends kids while she enjoys life.
As George gets ready for Halloween, Carmen falls into a depression after her best friend, Toby, moves away. After George 'letting Carmen find her own way' doesn't work, Angie gets her on the cheerleader team so she can make new friends.
Benny fears she's going through menopause but when she goes to the doctor, finds out that in fact she has the gonorrhea. Meanwhile, Angie tries to get her parents to reconcile.
Carmen tells her parents she wants to start dating, and she brings home a boy from her school for them to meet. Everything about Jason seems to be perfect, except that he and Carmen don't want to go out in public together.
When George forgets his wedding anniversary, he scrambles to get enough money for a nice ring. A few failed schemes later, he promises Angie something even better: to renew their wedding vows.
Carmen is not invited back to private school for the new semester, so Angie decides to homeschool her. But when the mother-daughter relationship becomes strained, George suggests a much better career option for his wife.
Pretending he's the mayor of Los Angeles, George bullies a menacing biker who won't release a stray dog that George's depressed mom, Benny, has grown to love. But the plan backfires when the real L.A. mayor, ANTONIO VILLARAIGOSA, visits the Lopez family.
Rather than give in to Benny's incessant pleas to buy her a new car, George and Angie agree to drive her around town just to get her out of the house.
When relatives contest the will and freeze his friend's trust fund, George's niece moves in, and brings along a boyfriend George has no intentions of contending with.
George becomes reluctant to testify on his mother's behalf at her sentencing when his grandmother reveals a secret kept from him since he was a baby.
